  • This recital continues my ongoing project to perform all of Messiaen’s piano music at An die Musik. Following performances of the Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus and concerts featuring the music of Messiaen and his students and a tribute to Messiaen’s wife Yvonne Loriod, this concert will focus on several of his earlier works. From his first published work to a set of ground-breaking etudes, this recital will feature several rarely-heard works.

  •      This tribute to the recently-deceased  Carter has long been in the works.  I am
  •      looking forward to sharing  a diverse cross-section of his repertoire, specifically
  •      contrasting his Sonata with that of Samuel Barber.  Both sonatas were written in
  •      the years immediately following WWII, and for all their differences, they share
  •      some interesting similarities that I am eager to explore.
  •                 Tickets are $10 and available at the door prior to the performance.

  •       I will be talking about compositional principles in Carter’s recent music and how
  •       they compare with his earlier writing styles.    I will examine several recent works
  •       and will perform Carter’s  Caténaires  and Fratribute.  In addition, an overview of
  •       Carter’s recent works for other instruments, voice, and chamber ensembles will
  •       be given.   Helpful tips for learning and performing this often intimidating
  •       repertoire and will be given, and I will recommend specific pieces and resources
  •       appropriate for students and teachers.
